The exhibit

Alatsomouri, Pacheia Ammos. 1370-1300 BC

This larnax in the shape of a bathtub, or an asaminthos as Homer calls it, was found at Alatsomouri in Pacheia Ammos, in a rock-cut chamber tomb containing three larnakes of the same type. The outside is richly decorated with painted themes such as the octopus, papyrus flowers and geometric motifs arranged in vertical panels. On the interior, along one long side, is a lively depiction of three fish under a horizontal band which probably symbolises the surface of the sea. Themes from the marine world are often found in the iconography of the Minoan larnakes. They may be an abstract reference to the Minoan belief in the world of the dead across the sea.
